Hyphenated Compound Words

 

When a hyphenated compound word appears in a context where words are

normally capitalized use the following guidelines. This is in accordance

with AACR2, Appendix A and LC Cataloguing Service Bulletin, no. 17, p. 28.

A. Capitalize the first element.

B. Capitalize the second element.

1. If it is a noun

            High-Level

            Small-Scale

            Sea-Bed

2. If it is a proper adjective

            French-American . _.,. ,....,

3. If the first and second elements are of equal value

            North-South

C. Lowercase the second element.

In all other compound words lowercase the second element

            ̽»¨¾«Ñ¡-keeping

            Land-locked

             Light-signalling

            Treaty-making

II. Hyphenated Prefixes

When a word is preceded by a hyphenated prefix use the following

guidelines. This is a deviation from AACR2 but is in accordance with the

United Nations Editorial Manual, 1st ed., 1983.

A. Capitalize the first element.

B. Capitalize the second element.

            Trans-Pacific

            Un-American

            Non-Aligned

            Non-Governmental

            Non-Nuclear-Weapon

            Inter-Agency

            Anti-Slavery

            Non-Self-Governing Territories

 

The second element should not be capitalized if the two parts normally

constitute a single word.

            Co-ordinate

            Co-operate
