New tool to improve UN System action for SDGs now online

A searchable online registry that outlines the actions, initiatives and plans for the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 39?UN System entities was launched today by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA).

By providing a clear picture of each entity’s activities, the new tool will help the UN System to avoid duplication, deliver as a whole, and develop a UN System-wide roadmap for the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs, explained Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs Liu Zhenmin.

In December 2017 Mr. Liu invited UN System entities to respond to a survey and share their actions to advance the SDGs. ?The results of that survey have now been turned into a user-friendly, searchable online database.? Mr. Liu stressed how responsive and supportive the UN System had been in this endeavour.

“From the survey and database […] we can see that UN entities are making a serious effort to align their new strategic work programmes with the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs,” said Mr. Liu. “I?am delighted to see a new institutional mind-set gradually taking shape, with a growing emphasis on moving away from silos to inter-linkages, to working in partnership, and to seeking synergies across organizations,” he said.

He noted with appreciation that the UN system’s support to member States is also being geared toward an integrated approach, focusing on linkages and nexuses among the SDGs. He observed a clear willingness to enhance collaboration both within the UN System and with business and civil society stakeholders. “The aim is to build on each other’s comparative advantages and focus on adding value to countries,” he said.

The database launched today offers a wealth of information and has great potential as a reference and analytic tool. UN system entities can use this information to learn from each other and identify more opportunities and better ways for collaboration.

“As we focus collectively on how the UN system can be transformational and do things differently, let us embed the integration, the interlinkages, and the ‘leaving no one behind’ principles into the UN’s culture and DNA,” said Mr. Liu.
