Panel discussion on “Migration and development: causes and impacts”, prepared by the Population Division, Department of Economic and Social Affairs. The objective of this special event is to bring together experts from government, civil society and academia to debate the linkages between migration and development, to identify best practices and lessons learned on how to harness the benefits of international migration, while minimizing its negative consequences. Panel members will discuss public policies that address the causes of unwanted migration, that maximize migration benefits, and that reduce migration challenges. Topics to be addressed will include the contribution of transnational communities to development in countries of origin, programmes for safe, orderly and voluntary migration, migrant integration, and practical steps to improve the governance of migration. Panelists will give their perspectives on public policies that facilitate labour mobility, address irregular migration, and promote migrant integration.</p> <h3 style="text-align: justify; margin-bottom: 11px;">Documents</h3> <ul> <li style="text-align: justify; margin-bottom: 11px;"><a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/undesa-pd-panel-ga-2012-conceptnote.pdf">Concept note</a></li> <li style="text-align: justify; margin-bottom: 11px;"><a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/undesa-pd-panel_ga-2012-programme.pdf">Programme</a></li> </ul> <h3 style="text-align: justify; margin-bottom: 11px;"> Programme</h3> <table border="0" cellpadding="1" cellspacing="1" style="width: 100%;"> <tbody> <tr> <td colspan="2" style="width: 15%; background-color: gold;"> <p><strong>Thursday, 15 November 2012</strong></p> </td> </tr> <tr> <td style="width: 15%; vertical-align: top;">15:00 – 18:00&nbsp;</td> <td><strong>Opening</strong></p> <ul> <li>Welcome: H.E. Today, virtually all countries in the world are simultaneously countries of destination, origin and transit for international migrants. Traditional immigration patterns are complemented by new migratory flows, fuelled by changing economic, demographic, political and social conditions. Changing migration patterns affect the size and composition of immigrant populations as well as economies and societies in countries of origin and destination. The rise in global mobility, the growing complexity of migratory patterns and the impact of such movements on development have all contributed to international migration becoming a priority for the international community.</p> <p>The 2013 Coordination Meeting on International Migration focus on recent migration trends and their relevance for development in countries of origin, destination and transit. The meeting addressed the importance of international migration on the United Nations development agenda, especially in light of the High-level Dialogue on International Migration and Development held by the General Assembly on 3-4 October 2013.</p> <h3>Documents</h3> <ul> <li> <p><a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/unpd_cm15_201302_objectives.pdf">Objectives</a></p> </li> <li> <p><a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/unpd_cm15_201302_agenda_220112.pdf">Agenda</a></p> </li> <li> <p><a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/unpd_cm15_201302_organization_of_work.pdf">Organization of work</a></p> </li> <li> <p><a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/unpd_cm15_201302_provisional_list_of_participants.pdf">List of participants</a></p> </li> </ul> </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-inline clearfix"><div class="field-label">tags:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/development/desa/pd/tags/2013">2013</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/development/desa/pd/tags/migration">Migration</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/development/desa/pd/tags/international-migration">International migration</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-featured-categories field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Categories:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/development/desa/pd/categories/coordination">Coordination</a></div></div></div> Wed, 23 Jan 2019 20:38:00 +0000 MSTOCKTO 659 at /development/desa/pd Intergovernmental Conference to adopt the Global Compact for safe, orderly and regular migration /development/desa/pd/events/intergovernmental-conference-adopt-global-compact-safe-orderly-and-regular-migration <div class="field field-name-field-date field-type-date field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><span class="date-display-range"><span class="date-display-start">Monday, 10 December 2018 - 10:00am</span> to <span class="date-display-end">Tuesday, 11 December 2018 - 6:00pm</span></span></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><h3>Overview</h3> <p class="rtejustify">&nbsp; The Global Compact for Migration represents a historic opportunity to improve international cooperation on migration, and to strengthen the contributions of migrants and migration to sustainable development. Today, there are over 258 million migrants around the world living outside their country of birth. This figure is expected to grow as a result of a number of factors including overall population growth, increasing connectivity, trade, rising inequality, demographic imbalances and climate change.</p> <p class="rtejustify">Migration provides immense opportunity and benefits – for the migrants, host communities and communities of origin. However, when poorly regulated it can create significant challenges. These challenges include overwhelming social infrastructures with the unexpected arrival of large numbers of people and the deaths of migrants undertaking dangerous journeys.</p> <p class="rtejustify">In this context, following <a href="https://refugeesmigrants.un.org/consultation-phase" target="_blank">18 months of consultation</a> and <a href="https://refugeesmigrants.un.org/intergovernmental-negotiations">negotiations</a>, UN Member States have agreed to adopt a <a href="https://undocs.org/A/CONF.231/3" target="_blank">Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration</a> (draft outcome document available in all official languages). It is the first-ever UN global agreement on a common approach to international migration in all its dimensions.</p> <p class="rtejustify">The Global Compact for Migration is non-legally binding. It is grounded in values of state sovereignty, responsibility-sharing, non-discrimination, and human rights, and recognizes that a cooperative approach is needed to optimize the overall benefits of migration, while addressing its risks and challenges for individuals and communities in countries of origin, transit and destination.</p> <p><a href="https://refugeesmigrants.un.org/migration-compact" target="_blank">Find out more about the process to develop the Global Compact for Migration on the UN Refugees and Migrants website.</a></p> <p>The Global Compact for Migration comprises 23 objectives for better managing migration at local, national, regional and global levels. The Global Compact for Migration:</p> <ul> <li>aims to mitigate the adverse drivers and structural factors that hinder people from building and maintaining sustainable livelihoods in their countries of origin;&nbsp;</li> <li>intends to reduce the risks and vulnerabilities migrants face at different stages of migration by respecting, protecting and fulfilling their human rights and providing them with care and assistance;</li> <li>seeks to address the legitimate concerns of states and communities, while recognizing that societies are undergoing demographic, economic, social and environmental changes at different scales that may have implications for and result from migration;</li> <li>strives to create conducive conditions that enable all migrants to enrich our societies through their human, economic and social capacities, and thus facilitate their contributions to sustainable development at the local, national, regional and global levels.</li> </ul> <h3>Documents</h3> <ul> <li> <p>Concept notes&nbsp;(<a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/undesa_pd_2018_gcm_concept_note-dialogue_1_final.pdf" target="_blank">Dialogue #1</a>)&nbsp;(<a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/undesa_pd_2018_gcm_concept_note_dialogue_2_final.pdf" target="_blank">Dialogue #2</a>)</p> </li> <li> <p><a href="/en/conf/migration/about-conference.shtml" target="_blank">Organization of work</a></p> </li> </ul> <p>&nbsp;</p> </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-relatted-links field-type-link-field field-label-inline clearfix"><div class="field-label">Related links:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="http://www.un.org/en/conf/migration/">Intergovernmental Conference on the Global Compact for Migration</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-inline clearfix"><div class="field-label">tags:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/development/desa/pd/tags/migration">Migration</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-featured-categories field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Categories:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/development/desa/pd/categories/migration">Migration</a></div></div></div> Wed, 09 Jan 2019 20:54:00 +0000 MVICENTE2 581 at /development/desa/pd
