Overview

General Assembly Second committee special event. Panel discussion on “Migration and development: causes and impacts”, prepared by the Population Division, Department of Economic and Social Affairs. The objective of this special event is to bring together experts from government, civil society and academia to debate the linkages between migration and development, to identify best practices and lessons learned on how to harness the benefits of international migration, while minimizing its negative consequences. Panel members will discuss public policies that address the causes of unwanted migration, that maximize migration benefits, and that reduce migration challenges. Topics to be addressed will include the contribution of transnational communities to development in countries of origin, programmes for safe, orderly and voluntary migration, migrant integration, and practical steps to improve the governance of migration. Panelists will give their perspectives on public policies that facilitate labour mobility, address irregular migration, and promote migrant integration.

Overview

The Population Division and the Statistics Division of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN/DESA), in collaboration with the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and members of the Global Migration Group (GMG), are organizing an interregional workshop for African and European countries to strengthen the collection and use of international migration data for development. The workshop will bring together experts from national statistical offices in charge of producing official statistics on international migration as well as experts from relevant ministries or agencies in charge of compiling and analysing migration data from administrative sources.

Overview

The Population Division of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs is organizing, in collaboration with the National Population Council (CONAPO) of Mexico and the Economic Commission of Latin America and the Caribbean, an Expert Group Meeting on International Migration and Development in Latin America and the Caribbean. The purpose of the Meeting is to discuss the interrelationships between international migration and development from the perspective of Latin America and the Caribbean, with a view to contribute to a number of United Nations events on International Migration and Development that will be held in 2006, notably the thirty-ninth session of the Commission on Population and Development, which will have “International Migration and Development” as its special theme; the meeting of the Special Commission on Population and Development at the thirtieth session of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, and the high-level dialogue on International Migration and Development of the General Assembly of the United Nations to be held at its sixty-first session in 2006. With the support of UNFPA, representatives of Member States in Latin America and the Caribbean will attend the expert group meeting to benefit from the technical discussion of topics they will address in the various United Nations fora in 2006.

Overview

The Population Division of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs organized an expert group meeting on challenges and opportunities of international migration for development in the Arab region. The meeting was held at the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) in Beirut, Lebanon from 15 to 17 May 2006.

The purpose of the meeting was to provide a forum for substantive examination and discussion of key issues that Governments, international organizations and civil society face in addressing the challenges and opportunities that international migration poses for development in the Arab region. The Meeting brought together experts from academia and research centers as well as representatives from national governments, international organizations, civil society and the private sector. The meeting provided a platform to exchange views and debate regional issues on international migration and development in preparation for the first High-Level Dialogue on International Migration and Development, which was convened by the United Nations General Assembly in September 2006.

Overview

International migration is a global phenomenon is growing in scope, complexity and impact. Today, virtually all countries in the world are simultaneously countries of destination, origin and transit for international migrants. Traditional immigration patterns are complemented by new migratory flows, fuelled by changing economic, demographic, political and social conditions. Changing migration patterns affect the size and composition of immigrant populations as well as economies and societies in countries of origin and destination. The rise in global mobility, the growing complexity of migratory patterns and the impact of such movements on development have all contributed to international migration becoming a priority for the international community.

The 2013 Coordination Meeting on International Migration focus on recent migration trends and their relevance for development in countries of origin, destination and transit. The meeting addressed the importance of international migration on the United Nations development agenda, especially in light of the High-level Dialogue on International Migration and Development held by the General Assembly on 3-4 October 2013.

Overview

The Global Compact for Migration represents a historic opportunity to improve international cooperation on migration, and to strengthen the contributions of migrants and migration to sustainable development. Today, there are over 258 million migrants around the world living outside their country of birth. This figure is expected to grow as a result of a number of factors including overall population growth, increasing connectivity, trade, rising inequality, demographic imbalances and climate change.

Migration provides immense opportunity and benefits – for the migrants, host communities and communities of origin. However, when poorly regulated it can create significant challenges. These challenges include overwhelming social infrastructures with the unexpected arrival of large numbers of people and the deaths of migrants undertaking dangerous journeys.

In this context, following 18 months of consultation and negotiations, UN Member States have agreed to adopt a Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (draft outcome document available in all official languages). It is the first-ever UN global agreement on a common approach to international migration in all its dimensions.

The Global Compact for Migration is non-legally binding. It is grounded in values of state sovereignty, responsibility-sharing, non-discrimination, and human rights, and recognizes that a cooperative approach is needed to optimize the overall benefits of migration, while addressing its risks and challenges for individuals and communities in countries of origin, transit and destination.

The Global Compact for Migration comprises 23 objectives for better managing migration at local, national, regional and global levels. The Global Compact for Migration:

aims to mitigate the adverse drivers and structural factors that hinder people from building and maintaining sustainable livelihoods in their countries of origin;
intends to reduce the risks and vulnerabilities migrants face at different stages of migration by respecting, protecting and fulfilling their human rights and providing them with care and assistance;
seeks to address the legitimate concerns of states and communities, while recognizing that societies are undergoing demographic, economic, social and environmental changes at different scales that may have implications for and result from migration;
strives to create conducive conditions that enable all migrants to enrich our societies through their human, economic and social capacities, and thus facilitate their contributions to sustainable development at the local, national, regional and global levels.
