This unprecedented growth is due to the gradual increase in human lifespan owing to improvements in public health, nutrition, personal hygiene and medicine. It is also the result of high and persistent levels of fertility in some countries.

While it took the global population 12 years to grow from 7 to 8 billion, it will take approximately 15 years—until 2037— for it to reach 9 billion, a sign that the overall growth rate of the global population is slowing.

Countries with the highest fertility levels tend to be those with the lowest income per capita. Global population growth has therefore over time become increasingly concentrated among the world’s poorest countries, most of which are in sub-Saharan Africa. In these countries, sustained rapid population growth can thwart the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which remain the world’s best pathway toward a happy and healthy future.

Even though population growth magnifies the environmental impact of economic development, rising per capita incomes are the main driver of unsustainable patterns of production and consumption. The countries with the highest per capita consumption of material resources and emissions of greenhouse gas emissions tend to be those where income per capita is higher, not those where the population is growing rapidly.

Meeting the objectives of the Paris Agreement to limit global temperature rise, while achieving the SDGs, critically depends on curbing unsustainable patterns of production and consumption. Yet, slower population growth over many decades could help to mitigate the further accumulation of environmental damage in the second half of the current century.

Related links

Countdown to 15 November 2022

Policy brief

Press release

Press conference

Video

Statement by Ms. Maria-Francesca Spatolisano, Assistant Secretary-General for Policy Coordination and Inter-Agency Affairs, DESA

Media advisory

UN DESA Voice

SDG Blog by Dr. Natalia Kanem, Executive Director, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA)

World population reaching 8 billion: What this means for the family of humanity, op-ed by the Secretary-General (via USA Today)

The World at 8 Billion. Many countries have recorded dramatic declines in total fertility rates and in many others fertility has started to decline. Despite those trends, there remain 48 countries that have fertility levels above 5 children per woman. In Africa alone, the countries that have not yet embarked on their fertility transition account for over a fifth of the population of the continent.

There is broad agreement about the conditions that favour the onset of fertility transition. Those include general socio-economic development, decline in mortality, improvement in female education, changing demand for children, diffusion of new ideas and strong government policies and programmes. However, there is no consensus regarding the specific conditions that need to be present for the transition to begin. Among countries that have begun their fertility transition there exist a variety of circumstances that challenge existing theories of fertility transition and defy simple characterization of the conditions that lead to fertility decline. Thus, determining the prospects for fertility decline for the current high fertility countries requires an examination of the specific conditions in those countries.

The Population Division of the United Nations is organizing a Workshop on the Prospects for Fertility Decline in High Fertility Countries from 9-11 July 2001 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. Researchers from 14 different countries will meet to investigate the conditions that hinder or facilitate fertility decline, to provide insights into the prospects for decline and to indicate policy measures that may facilitate the onset of fertility decline. Five young researchers from Togo, Burkina Faso, Morocco, Cote D’Ivoire and the Democratic Republic of the Congo will also attend the Workshop as part of the Out-Reach Programme of the Population Division.

Documents

Objectives

Organization of work

List of participants

Organization of work

Monday, 9 July 2001

10:00 AM-1:00 PM

Morning session

I. The meeting took place at the United Nations in New York from 11 to 14 March 2002.

The meeting discussed assumptions for future levels of fertility, to be applied by the Division in its population projections for countries with intermediate levels of fertility, that is, countries where current fertility levels range between 2.1 and 5 children per woman. Until recently, the Division assumed that total fertility levels in intermediate-fertility countries would not fall below replacement level (2.1 children per woman) by 2050. However, this assumption has become less tenable as fertility levels in a growing number of developing and developed countries have fallen to, and remained, well below replacement.

Participants proposed that fertility in intermediate-fertility countries could decline to 1.85 children per woman by 2050. This assumption will have a momentous impact, both because of the large population of the intermediate-fertility countries (43 per cent of world population in 2000), and because of the many implications of sustained below-replacement fertility.

Documents

Executive Summary

Report

Annexes: Agenda, List of participants, List of documents

Summary of country papers

Organization of work

Monday, 11 March 2002

Morning

I. This shift is driven by the demographic transition from high to lower levels of both fertility and mortality. The social and economic consequences of these changes vary greatly across regions and countries.

In consideration of these major global demographic trends and their impacts on development, the Commission on Population and Development decided that the special theme of its 50th session, which will take place in New York from 3 to 7 April, 2017, would be “Changing population age structures and sustainable development”.

The meeting is to examine the various aspects of this topic, with emphasis on new evidence and analysis regarding the drivers and consequences of the changing age distribution of the population. Participants will review the demographic drivers of changing population age structures and examine the implications of shifts in the population age distribution for government policies regarding health, education, work, social protection and intergenerational support.
<p style="background-color: transparent;
