Considerable progress has been made by African Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs) in advancing their sustainable development goals, though much remains to be done in the areas of infrastructure, economic transformation and governance.

This is according to the outcome resolution of the Africa Regional review meeting in Botswana this week, the first preparatory meeting of the Third United Nations Conference on the Landlocked Developing Countries. The resolution will form a key part of deliberations towards the next Programme of Action for Landlocked Developing Countries, which will be adopted at that meeting, happening in Kigali next year.

The resolution acknowledges significant achievements made by African LLDCs across various sectors, including poverty eradication, education, healthcare, gender equality, and environmental sustainability. It also recognizes the dedicated efforts of governments, civil society organizations, and regional bodies in improving the well-being of their citizens and building resilient and inclusive economies.

It calls on the global community to provide increased financial resources, technology transfer, and capacity-building assistance to African LLDCs. Recognizing that sustainable development in Africa is crucial for global progress, the document urges international stakeholders to honor their commitments and fulfill their obligations towards the continent.

The draft outcome suggests several key actions to further advance sustainable development in Africa:

The document emphasizes the potential of green technologies and innovative approaches in achieving sustainable development goals.
