CISHECKI, Melanie (Canada)

Melanie Cischeki is currently the Executive Director of MediaWatch in Toronto, Canada since March 2001. Her background includes much experience working with government, civil society organizations and regulatory agencies. She has a demonstrated understanding of gender equity in media portrayal and regulation, and has much exposure to research and research analysis. She has a Certificate in Management of Human Services Organization, and a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communications/Psychology.

CROSSETTE, Barbara (USA)

Barbara Crossette, a journalism practitioner and writer on foreign affairs, has gained a great deal of experience from her employment at The New York Times, where she served as bureau chief at the United Nations from 1994-2001. Some of the awards that she has received include the George Polk Award for foreign reporting (1991) and the Buisness Council of the United Nations' Korn Ferry Award for outstanding reporting on the organization (1999). Currently she teaches a writing seminar on international affairs for Bard College and serves on the board of the Carnegie Council on Ethics and International Affairs in New York. Ms. Crossette received a B.A. in history and political science from Muhlenburg College and an M.A. in history from the University of Colorado.

GILL, Sonia (Barbados)

Sonia Gill has a background in media regulation, broadcast media, communication education, and social research methods. She is the Assistant Executive of the Broadcasting Commission of Jamaica. Her experience working in the media has varied from freelance communications consultant, to lecturer, freelance rapporteur, television and news editor, freelance producer, radio producer, and radio reporter. She has an LLB Bachelor of Laws, and a PhD in Mass Communication.

Ammu Joseph is currently a freelance journalist, media analyst/consultant. She lectures on "Covering Gender" at the Asian College of Journalism in Madras, India. She has worked as a magazine editor, freelance journalist, staff reporter, and editorial consultant. She has lectured at several colleges on journalism. She is a founder-member of India's newly- launched Network of Women in Media. She has written numerous articles in newspapers, journals, magazines and websites. She has contributed chapters to many books, has prepared several reports and has authored two books on her own. Ammu Joseph has a BSc in Public Communications and a B.A. in English Literature.

MORNA, Colleen Lowe (South Africa)

As Managing Director of Gender Links, Colleen Morna specializes in gender, communications and media, undertakes numerous studies and training, and facilitates workshops with the UN, SADC and ECA. Previously, she was the Chief Executive Office of the South African Commission on Gender Equality. She has a wide background and has been senior researcher, editor, freelance journalist, correspondent and contributor to numerous publications. Reem Obeidat has two Masters Degrees- one in Journalism Studies and one in Political Science (International Relations), and a BA in Journalism and Communications with special emphasis on Radio and Television. As a free lance public relations and media consultant, Mrs. Obeidat has a varied background, which has established her as an award-winning television producer, researcher, writer and presenter of many programs related to business, economics, politics, social issues and women's issues. ROLLS, Sharon Bhagwan (Fiji)

Sharon Bhagwan Rolls has had a career covering women and media, social marketing, and community media initiatives development and production. She has demonstrated a commitment to women and development issues through gender advocacy issues, and young women's leadership development and empowerment. Currently, she is the Coordinator for the establishment of fem'Linkpacific: Media Initiatives for Women, an independent women's NGO established to increase the visibility of gender issues/women's stories. Teresa Silva has a Masters degree in Social Communications, and a BA in Communications. She is currently a researcher and member of the Faculty of Communicational Sciences of the Universidad Diego Portales. She has also held many other positions as researcher, consultant and advisor, and has been involved in many development and research projects in the Latin American and North American regions. She has lectured extensively on communications, media and gender, and has authored and co-authored many books, papers and articles.

Bernadette Van Dijck is an advisor in media policy for the Dutch Public Broadcasting Organization. She covers accountability and public broadcasting policy, diversity policy, and is also responsible for research into representation of gender, race and age in Dutch television. Her career has covered jobs as programme maker, spokesperson, journalist, communications officer, and she has been Head of the Gender Portrayal Department of the Dutch Public Broadcasting Organization. While at the University of Utrecht, she pursued studies in Linguistics and Dutch Literature, as well as Film Studies.

Anne Walker has been the Executive Director of the International Women's Tribune Centre (IWTC) since its inception in 1976.
