Located in the city of Koya (Koysinjaq) in Kurdistan Region of F.R. Iraq, Koya University launched the Green University initiative on 16 May 2024, falling within the 7th pillar of its Strategic Plan for five years (2023-2027). The initiative is an effective and proactive step to help the community and the planet through ensuring a campus which is green and environmentally conscious. The initiative includes some important and environmentally effective practices at Koya University campus as mentioned below: 


1. Clean Transportation
2. Establishment of Ponds
3. Wastewater Treatment 
4. Well Water Treatment for Potable Purposes 
5. Transitioning the Heating System at the Dormitory to a Cleaner Energy Source 
6. Encouraging Research on Sustainability 
7. Green Research Park 
8. Encouraging Energy-Efficient Buildings on the University Campus 
9. Promotion of Awareness Campaigns among Students and Staff 


The establishment of this Green University initiative indicates that Koya University works towards the necessity to address environmental concerns such as the reduction of industrial pollution and how to tackle the increasing global energy demands. Koya University aims at revolutionizing education to be up to date in a way that comes within the green scientific and economic developments that prevail today’s world.
