On 29 September 2020, the Under-Secretary-General for Operational Support, Atul Khare, and the head of the European Union Delegation to the UN, Ambassador Olof Skoog, signed an agreement to strengthen operational cooperation in international peace operations and crisis management.

Currently, the UN and EU work side by side in Somalia, Central African Republic, Libya, Kosovo and in support of the G5 Sahel Joint Force.

The Framework Agreement Between the United Nations and the European Union for the Provision of Mutual Support provides an overarching framework for the provision of operational support services in response to unfolding crises.

DOS’s Support Partnerships Service in the Division for Special Activities, responsible for establishing and maintaining cooperation with key internal and external partners, will work with stakeholders to translate commitments into tangible and concrete guidance to field entities.

Deepening cooperation with partners in peacekeeping is a key priority for DOS.

“[Our collaborative] partnerships are more important now than ever before amid the growing array of global challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic”, said Mr. Khare.

“The finalization of this agreement also speaks to the Secretary-General’s message to develop a network of multilateral institutions, in multiple countries and regions, that work together for peace, sustainable development, and the promotion of human rights.”

DOS will continue to invest in mutually beneficial partnerships with regional organizations and other United Nations actors and governments to achieve the scale and effectiveness needed to deliver results. This includes relying on partners based on comparative advantages of existing capacities, specialized requirements and surge needs.
